Dunwich

This was an interesting listing in the ebayeum. Worthy of recording for future use.

The seller states:

COOPER, Ernest Read, FSA. MEMORIES OF BYGONE DUNWICH. Published by the author, Southwold, 1930. Vg in pictorial wraps. 28 pages. Inscribed and dated 1931 across top of title page.
The story of the East Anglian village of Dunwich, gradually eroded by the North Sea until is disappeared entirely the waves, has gripped the imagination of numerous fantasy writers, most notably H.P. Lovecraft, who used the name and remote location in THE DUNWICH HORROR (1929), though re-locating it in the US. Dunwich also inspired Algernon Swinburne's poem BY THE NORTH SEA and Arthur Machen's novel THE TERROR (1917). The image of an inundated town where the church still rings recurs in films and novels.
Cooper's account adds a number of little-known references in poetry and literature, including Edward Fitzgerald, who brought Carlyle tghere in a visit, reproduces grave plates rescued from the vanished churchyard etc.
